Recipe: Savoury Mince

Writer's picture: BCC BlogBCC Blog

Dice 1 medium onion. Cook in oil until soft.

Add 500g mince, and cook until brown. Pour off any excess fat.

Mix together:

1 cup water or beef stock

– ½ tsp curry powder

– 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (or soy sauce)

– 1 tsp mustard

– 1 tbsp tomato sauce

– salt (omit if using beef stock)

Add to mince and stir until boiling.

Simmer for 30-45 minutes.

Thicken with cornflour or flour and cook for another 2 minutes.

You can use this mince recipe as the base for a number of different meals:

  • Shepherd's pie: top with mashed potato and a little cheese, then bake in oven.

  • Mince pies: spoon into puff pastry cases and bake – especially easy in a pie maker or toastie maker.

  • Mince on toast: serve on toast, with mashed potato and peas/beans/carrots.

  • Sloppy Joes: serve in a hamburger bun or thick bread slices
