Ready Steady Cook Lockdown Challenge

Writer's picture: BCC BlogBCC Blog

Here's a fun competition idea for locked-down households. Compete with your friends and family, wherever they are!

Competition:

  • Each household races to make a complete meal in 2 hours, using restricted ingredients.

  • Photo and/or video evidence must be submitted via an agreed platform by the deadline.

  • Judge the other entries while you eat!

Set up:

  • Encourage your friends, family and neighbours to take part

  • Each family or household competes as a team

  • Circulate the rules

  • Set a date, and a finish time

  • Decide which platform(s) you'll use to communicate during the competition and submit your photos and menus: e.g. WhatsApp, Zoom, Facebook, Dropbox

Rules:

  • Each team has to make at least two savoury dishes and something sweet

  • The savoury dishes could be a main and side, or a starter and main

  • Max 2 hours to prepare

  • You can only use what you already have at home: no specific shopping for ingredients

  • The ingredients must comply with the restrictions outlined below:

What you're allowed to use:

  • 1 type of meat or protein

  • 3 types of fresh produce

  • 5 pantry/fridge/freezer items (this includes grains, tinned foods, packet mixes, herbs and spices, stock, frozen peas, cheese, additional eggs/onions etc.)

  • Any of these free items: water, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper, 1 onion, 1 egg, milk, butter, flour, sugar, baking powder/soda, anything ‘homegrown’ from your own garden e.g., lemon, vegetables, herbs, fruit etc.

Entries:

  • Submit your entry by the agreed deadline. Progress photos / videos encouraged.

  • Entries must include: photo or list of the ingredients, photo of the dishes, photo of table settings and costumes (optional)

  • Choose which awards you want to apply for. You may need to pitch!

  • Vote on the other entries. Who do you think should win?

Possible Awards:

  • Three Ways: Using the limits to your advantage by utilising an ingredient in multiple ways

  • Less is More: Keeping it simple with the fewest ingredients

  • Home Grown: Most ingredients used from your own garden

  • Fine Dining: Creating a meal fit for a Michelin Star

  • Humble Pie: A pie.

  • Made From Scratch: No pre-made ingredients here!

  • Budget Friendly: Creating a delicious meal that doesn’t break the budget

  • Fabulous Feast: The widest variety of dishes

  • A Taste of…: An entire menu that represents a cuisine

  • Takeout Night: Who needs Uber Eats?

  • Around the World: Dishes from different places

  • Creative Pairings: Unusual combinations that work

  • Covet Award: If you could try another team's creation, which would it be?

...or come up with your own.
