Remote boardgames

It can be hard when you miss your friends and all the games you normally play together. Playing online games isn't quite the same. But it's easy to keep playing real boardgames with your friends if you've all got a phone or virtual connection (like WhatsApp, Zoom, or Facetime).

  • Find a group of friends who want to play, and schedule in a time.

  • Choose a game that you all have at home (for example, Monopoly, Trouble, Game of Life, Yahtzee...)

  • Everyone sets up the board in their own home, next to their phone or device connection. Everyone will need all the counters and cards laid out ready, just as you normally would.

  • Decide a colour or counter for everyone, and who is going to go first.

  • The first person throws the dice (or draws a card), and tells everyone what it is. Everyone moves that colour counter on their board.

  • The next person takes a turn, and tells everyone what it is, and what they want to do. Everyone else plays that move on their own board.

  • Carry on in this way, moving counters for each other, until you finish the game.

Remember:

In games like Monopoly, you don't need to manage everyone's money and real estate cards for them. Just keep yours, and the rest should be kept in the "bank". If you have to pay rent to someone, then pay it to the bank. They can take that amount of rent money from their bank and add it to their own pile.

Keep all the counters on the board, and any houses/hotels (or other markers), so you know when you land on someone or something.

Don't forget to move everyone's counters for them on your board, otherwise you won't know when you land on them (or they land on you).

For Chance or other cards drawn during the game, it doesn't matter if your shuffled deck is in a different order than your friends' piles. It might even be fun if everyone draws a "go to jail" card in the same round!
