Family Olympics 2020

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been postponed. That means there's room in the calendar to stage your own Family Olympics!

  1. Decide what events you want to host. You'll need to carry out an inspection of your house and garden to see what might work. Do you have space for some running races? Hurdles or steeple chase? Stair-climbing? Object-tossing? Long-jump? Volleyball? Table tennis? Check out the official list of Olympic sports and see how many you can recreate at home.

  2. Create a programme of events. This could happen all in one day, or over several days. Work out the time and venue for each. For example: 11:00am, Athletics: gumboot-throwing, back lawn. 12:00pm, Basketball: shooting hoops, driveway. 1:00pm, Athletics: standing-jump, hallway. 2:00pm, Gymnastics: handstands, living room. 4:00pm, Shooting: pea-shooters, kitchen.

  3. Decide how each event will work. Does everyone race at the same time, or take turns, or compete in pairs? Do you have one round or lots of attempts? Who is going to judge and measure?

  4. Think about whether you want an audience or a media commentator. You could even film the events. Or perhaps you can join (virtually!) with another family, and stream footage and reports from their house to yours, and vice versa.

  5. Sign up your competitors for each event. What country will they represent? Do they need to wear national colours?

  6. Make posters to advertise your Olympics and put up round the house. Design a logo. You can also make programmes, tickets, guidebooks. Interview the competitors. Hang up flags. Get the house ready to host!

  7. Plan your opening ceremony. Will you parade in? Will there be any music or entertainment? How about a closing ceremony?

  8. Design some medals or wreaths, or other prizes for your winners. How do you plan to give them out? Will you keep a medal tally?

  9. Let the games begin!

We'd love you to share how things went, and any photos/video you take of Your Family Olympics 2020. Send them in to us, or share with your friends in other houses.
